Hospital Dentistry & Special Needs Dentistry

Drs. Ressler, Hirschl and Lelchuk understand that sometimes traditional dental care is not an option for certain patients. Hospital Dentistry is an area of dentistry where we integrate medicine and dentistry. Either because of a complex medical condition or due to a psychiatric or developmental complication, treatment must be performed in a hospital environment and in conjunction with the medical staff. Drs. Ressler, Hirschl & Lelchuk have had postgraduate training at various medical centers, enabling them to treat medically complex or compromised patients as well as special needs patients. Drs. Ressler, Hirschl and Lelchuk are part of the Medical Staff at Mount Sinai Medical Center on Miami Beach, allowing them to provide this comprehensive, hospital-based dental treatment that the special needs patient and caregiver are seeking.

In our practice we routinely provide care to patients with heart conditions, organ transplants, immune-compromised health issues and also cancer whether or not they are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments. Drs. Ressler, Hirschl and Lelchuk are also available to provide dental clearance for those patients undergoing extensive medical procedures that require them to be infection free.

The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry defines special health care needs as “any physical, developmental, mental, sensory, behavioral, cognitive, or emotional impairment or limiting condition that requires medical management, health care intervention, and/or use of specialized services or programs. The condition may be developmental or acquired and may cause limitations in performing daily self-maintenance activities or substantial limitations in a major life activity. Health care for individuals with special needs requires specialized knowledge, increased awareness and attention, adaptation, and accommodative measures beyond what are considered routine.”

For those who cannot maintain or receive traditional dental care, hospital dentistry with Drs. Ressler, HIrschl and Lelchuk offers a compassionate, efficient alternative. Besides those situations listed above, those patients that are dental phobic or those that have compromised mental functions may be unable to complete standard dental treatment on their own. In some cases, dental needs and medical problems may be intertwined, requiring the presence of both a medical doctor and a dentist.
